Health and Safety in Nepal

From the heights of the Himalayas to the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, Nepal beckons with wonder. But as you tread the path less traveled, be savvy, be prepared, and let every step be a story worth telling!

Health

Vaccinations:

  • Recommended vaccines for travelers to Nepal include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Depending on the length of your stay and the areas you'll visit, you might also consider vaccines for Japanese Encephalitis, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Meningitis, and Yellow Fever.

  • Keep in mind that while Yellow Fever is not a risk in Nepal, proof of vaccination is required if you're coming from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Food & Water Safety:

  • Avoid tap water. Always drink bottled water and ensure the seal is intact when purchasing.

  • Avoid ice in drinks unless sure it's made from filtered or boiled water.

  • Eat freshly cooked food and avoid street food unless it's from a reputable vendor and is cooked in front of you.

  • Avoid salads and unpeeled fruits as they might have been washed in contaminated water.

Altitude Sickness:

  • This can be a risk when trekking in higher elevations. Make sure to acclimatize properly and be aware of the symptoms, which include headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

Insect Bites:

  • Use insect repellents and wear long sleeves/pants during dawn and dusk to avoid mosquito bites. This helps in preventing diseases like Dengue and Malaria.

Safety

General Safety:

  • Petty theft and pickpocketing can occur in tourist areas. Always keep an eye on your belongings.

  • Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics.

  • Be cautious in less crowded areas, especially at night.

Trekking Safety:

  • Always inform someone about your trekking plans.

  • If possible, trek with a group or hire a local guide.

  • Check weather conditions and potential political disturbances in the area.

Travel During Strikes ("Bandhs"):

  • Political strikes can halt public transportation. Always check local news or ask locals.

Natural Disasters:

  • Nepal lies in an earthquake-prone zone. Familiarize yourself with earthquake safety measures.

  • Landslides can occur during monsoon. Be cautious and avoid traveling on mountain roads immediately after heavy rain.

Emergency Numbers:

  • Police: 100

  • Fire: 101

  • Ambulance: 102

  • Tourist Police: +977-1-4247041 (Kathmandu)

Insurance Recommendations:

  • It's strongly advised to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, especially if you're trekking in remote areas. Ensure that your insurance covers high-altitude trekking if you plan to trek in the Himalayas.
