Getting to Saint Martin/Sint Maarten and Getting Around the Island

Discover how to get to and around Saint Martin/Sint Maarten effortlessly. From international airports like SXM to public buses and car rentals, learn about the multitude of convenient options for transportation on this dual nation Caribbean Island.

Getting to Saint Martin/Sint Maarten

By Air:

  • Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM): This is the primary international gateway located on the Dutch side of the island. The airport serves flights from North America, Europe, and other Caribbean islands.

  • L'Espérance Airport (SFG): Also known as Grand Case Airport, this smaller airport is located on the French side and mainly serves regional flights from other Caribbean islands.

By Sea:

  • Ferry Services: Ferries operate between Saint Martin and nearby islands such as Anguilla, St. Barts, and Saba.

  • Cruise Ships: Philipsburg is a popular cruise ship port. If you're arriving by cruise, you'll dock at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities near Philipsburg at the John Craane Cruise Terminal.

Getting Around the Island

Public Transportation:

  • Minibuses: These operate extensively on both the Dutch and French sides. They are an economical but less flexible option.

  • Public Buses: Available mainly on the Dutch side, these are also a cost-effective way to get around.

Taxi:

  • Taxis: Widely available but can be more expensive, especially for long distances. Always agree on a fare before starting your journey.

Car Rental:

  • Rental Cars: This is one of the most convenient options if you plan to explore the island extensively. Both international and local car rental agencies are available.

Scooters and Bicycles:

  • Rentals: These are popular for shorter distances and are widely available for rent. Remember that traffic drives on the right side of the road on both sides of the island.

On Foot:

  • Walking: Some areas, like Philipsburg and Marigot, are easily walkable. However, the island's hilly terrain and hot climate can make walking less practical for long distances.

Boats and Ferries:

  • Island Hopping: For trips to nearby islands or remote beaches, small boats and ferries are available, mainly from Marigot and Philipsburg.

Tips

  • Be aware that while the island is small, traffic jams are common, especially around Philipsburg.

  • If you're renting a car, make sure to inquire about parking facilities at your accommodation, as not all places offer free parking.
