Getting to Sri Lanka and Getting Around Sri Lanka

When planning your travel, it's worth noting that while Sri Lanka is relatively small, journeys can take longer than expected due to traffic and winding roads, especially in hilly regions. Always allow plenty of time for travel and try to soak up the scenery along the way. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with a rich history and culture, and there's often as much to see on the journey as there is at the destination.

Getting to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island nation located in South Asia. The main international gateway to Sri Lanka is the Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located in Katunayake, near the capital city of Colombo.

Most visitors will arrive by air, with a variety of airlines offering direct and indirect flights from many parts of the world. Direct flights are available from several cities in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, while connecting flights are common from North America and Australia.

It's also essential to check visa requirements before your travel. Most travelers will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering Sri Lanka, which can typically be done online.

Getting Around Sri Lanka

Once you're in Sri Lanka, there are several modes of transportation available to help you explore this beautiful island:

  • Trains: The train system in Sri Lanka is efficient, inexpensive, and offers stunning views, particularly on the routes through the hill country. The train journey from Kandy to Ella is often hailed as one of the most beautiful in the world.

  • Buses: Buses are the most common form of public transportation in Sri Lanka and are a very economical way to travel. However, they can be crowded and a bit uncomfortable for long distances.

  • Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Taxis are readily available in cities, and ride-sharing services like Uber are also operational in major urban areas.

  • Tuk-Tuks: These three-wheeled vehicles are a fun and popular way to get around, especially in cities. Always negotiate the fare before starting your journey.

  • Private Vehicle Hire: If you're comfortable driving in Sri Lanka, you could hire a car or a motorbike. Keep in mind that driving in Sri Lanka can be quite challenging due to traffic and different road conditions.

  • Domestic Flights: For longer distances, or to skip the traffic altogether, small domestic flights are offered by Cinnamon Air and other operators.
