Getting to Turks & Caicos and Getting Around the Islands

Learn how to get to and around Turks & Caicos, from flying into Providenciales to exploring the islands by car, taxi, or ferry. Your essential guide to transportation in this Caribbean paradise.

Getting to Turks & Caicos

By Air: The primary gateway to the Turks and Caicos Islands is Providenciales International Airport (PLS). Major airlines from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries operate flights to and from Providenciales. Other islands like Grand Turk and South Caicos also have smaller airports but are generally reached via a domestic flight from Providenciales.

By Sea: Some travelers arrive by private yacht or cruise ship. Cruise ships generally dock at the Grand Turk Cruise Center.

Ferries: Ferries operate between some of the islands, most commonly between Providenciales and North Caicos, and North Caicos to Middle Caicos.

Getting Around the Islands

Car Rentals: Renting a car is one of the most convenient ways to explore Providenciales and some of the other larger islands. Drive on the left side of the road, and remember that seat belts are mandatory.

Taxis: Taxis are widely available, especially in Providenciales and Grand Turk. They operate on a fixed-rate system, and it's advisable to confirm the fare before starting your journey.

Public Transport: Public transportation is limited. Some local buses known as "jitneys" operate in Providenciales, but their routes are not fixed and can be unreliable.

Bicycles and Scooters: These are a popular way to get around smaller islands and can often be rented from hotels or local businesses.

Boats and Ferries: For island hopping, boats and ferries are commonly used. Services operate regularly between Providenciales and North and Middle Caicos, and less frequently to South Caicos and Salt Cay.

Walking: In smaller areas and within resort communities, walking is often feasible, but the heat can make longer treks uncomfortable.

Each island has its unique charm and attractions, and the mode of transportation you choose will depend on what you want to see and do. Always plan ahead, especially if you're intending to visit multiple islands.
